Sydney develops innovative, interest-based, and strength-focused curriculum and classes to engage and motivate students to find joy in learning. In all of her classes, she strives to create welcoming learning environments where everyone feels like they are part of a community and comfortable asking questions and sharing their ideas.
She works to incorporate multidisciplinary and multi-modal activities in her lessons, which means learners may be building in Minecraft, building social-emotional skills, and practicing and building skills that are part of the design process. In another class, students may be building a base understanding of major historical eras and also developing creative and artistic skills.
You can read more about Sydney's current class offerings below, and be sure to keep an eye on this space for new classes!
This course features the creation of a “Day-in-the-Life” video about a career field of each learner’s choice, and it is centered around personal interest discovery and exploration. That means learners are in the driver’s seat for this journey!
In this project-based learning class, learners will identify and analyze their own interests, strengths, and preferences to determine a career field that intrigues them most. This career field will become their individualized project topic, and we will use that topic to focus the development of media literacy and research skills, narrative writing, and ultimately the production of a Day-in-the-Life style video in which they take on the role of a professional in their chosen career field.
Sydney will be offering this class at Athena's Advanced Academy Fall 2024.
Have you ever looked at a book cover and wondered how it was designed? What about a tube of toothpaste, a box of cereal, or a giant light-up billboard?
All of these (and more!) are examples of graphic design in our modern life. Did you know, though, that graphic design has been around since the Stone Age? In this course, we will explore how humans have been creating graphic design throughout history, from the prehistoric era all the way to modern times.

Does your learner love building in Minecraft? In this class, learners are challenged with a new building theme each week and they share their builds with each other.
During our first week, learners are asked to complete a building challenge survey, where they make choices on the challenges that will appear throughout this 12-week class. I will then randomly assign one of the top-rated choices each week! This gives learners choice and autonomy, and encourages everyone to make their voice heard!
This course is not just about fun in Minecraft; it's also a great opportunity to practice social-emotional skills, focus on creativity, and develop confidence in groups!
Sydney will be offering this class in the Gifted Homeschoolers Forum (GHF) Virtual Co-op Fall 2024.
